India

With a population of one billion, India is certainly a society of complex structures, diverse groups, and strong religious beliefs. Although Buddhism was founded in India, more than 80 percent of Indians are Hindu; roughly ten percent are Muslim.

India won independence from Britain in 1947 after the nonviolent resistance led by Mohandas Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru. India's landscape includes the Himalaya Mountains — the highest on earth — and the Ganges Plain. Industries include textiles and steel, though rice farming and handicraft production are important trades as well.
