African Sunset NecklacePRINT THIS PAGE

SKU: 4110080

SKU# 4110080

Knotted-ribbon necklace features ceramic beads glazed burgundy and gray metallic, giving the appearance of hematite. Artisans of the Jacaranda Workshop in Nairobi, Kenya, create each of the ceramic beads for this necklace by hand. Clay for each bead is measured out, shaped, and strung on a wire holder for glazing and firing.

Jacaranda, which began exporting products in 1984, offers training and employment to 30 graduates of the Jacaranda Special School in Nairobi, Kenya’s first school for people with mental disabilities. The workshop produces stylish jewelry using materials such as clay and brass. Besides earning a living, Jacaranda employees gain job skills and self-confidence in an upbeat environment.
