About Ten Thousand Villages in Baltimore, MD
Ten Thousand Villages in Baltimore, MD, is a fair trade retailer of artisan-crafted home decor, personal accessories and gift items from across the globe. Featuring products from more than 130 artisan groups in some 38 countries, we are part of a network of over 390 retail outlets throughout the United States selling Ten Thousand Villages products.
As one of the world’s oldest and largest fair trade organizations, Ten Thousand Villages has spent more than 60 years cultivating trading relationships in which artisans receive a fair price for their work and consumers have access to distinctive handcrafted items. We seek to establish long-term buying relationships in places where skilled artisans are under- or unemployed, and in which they lack other opportunities for income. A founding member of the World Fair Trade Organization (WFTO), Ten Thousand Villages sees fair trade as an alternative approach to conventional international trade.
Located in the heart of Fells Point, we are Baltimore's Fair Trade Connection.

Meet Our Volunteers
I have worked at Ten Thousand Villages both at Kenilworth and Fells Point since my retirement from Hopkins in 2009. I have always loved the store and shopped there often while working. I knew that I would want to volunteer at the store upon my retirement and went to work there within one month of retiring. It is like having a second family. I love the staff and we have a lot of fun together. I also love the customers who come from far and wide at the Fells Point store. I always try to find out where people are from and very often we have shared memories of places where I have been or know of. Working two days a week at the store gives me the chance to both wait on customers and help out with inventory, shipments, events, etc. I love the variety of work I do. I also just joined the Board of Ten Thousand Villages which gives me a chance to help out in other ways - marketing, planning, etc. In short, I have found my niche after working full time for 35 years at Johns Hopkins in Student Affairs and International Services. It is a perfect work environment for those who love working with people from all walks of life and all peoples and cultures. In short, I love it!
What can I say, I'm new, but wow! I love it there. The staff, the customers, and the products are wonderful. The concept is really the reason I'm there, though. To know that I am, in a small way, helping people around the world less fortunate than I is very gratifying.
I feel the same way about contributing time to Ten Thousand, especially since I've known producers in developing countries and feel an obligation to help them find a profitable market for their creations.
I have been volunteering for only 2 months now and I'm already hooked on volunteering at Ten Thousand Villages! I enjoy volunteering at Ten Thousand Villages because I know that the items we sell help the artisans receive a fair wage. It enables them to have their stories be heard and gives hope to those who need funds to go to school and to support their families. That hope is what I treasure the most about volunteering with this non-profit organization. And to see many others support fair trade brings a smile to my face every time I volunteer!
It's an opportunity to meet people and share with them about some of the projects I know, help others by giving my time and energy, and to be creative. Besides it is such fun!
