Natural gardener’s hat is made from bark cloth, a unique material that has been used by Bagandan artisans for more than 600 years to make clothing. The hat is water-resistant, and will keep the wearer’s head dry in a light shower. Bark cloth will dry out easily without being damaged. Bark cloth is made with the inner bark of the Mutuba tree, which is harvested during the wet season and, in a long and strenuous process, beaten with different types of wooden mallets to make it soft and give it an even terra cotta color. The cloth is worn mainly at coronation and healing ceremonies, funerals and cultural gatherings, but is also used for curtains, mosquito screens, bedding and storage. Bark cloth is a renewable resource. After bark is harvested, the tree is wrapped in banana leaves and the bark grows back again in three months. Thus it is possible to cut the bark again and again.
