Beautiful silver wire inlay outlines this black metal hair clip in a chaining pattern, surrounding a central flower. Produced by the multi-step Bidri inlay process, carried on for hundreds of years.

Bidri is the art of inlaying silver wire on an alloy of 95% zinc and 5% copper. It originated in Bidar, south India, 700 years ago. Designs do not include human or animal form but floral motifs are used. The piece is cast, then its surface smoothed. The design is engraved and silver wire inlaid in the grooves. The piece is rubbed with a mixture of mineral-enriched clay and ammonium chloride solution. This turns the zinc black while the silver retains its original shine.
