With painstaking precision, Indian artisans adorn this unique frame with pieces of broken glass bangles, the jingling ornament worn by women throughout the subcontinent. Most glass products in India, including the bangles used to make these products, are made from recycled post-consumer glass shards, a process that creates beauty from something that would otherwise be discarded.

The group of artisans creating this product has chosen the name Ashirwad, which means “blessings.” The group, originally supported by Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) in Kolkata (formerly Calcutta), now operates from a home in the suburbs of the city. All of the women are socially and economically disadvantaged. MCC’s Global Family Program pays for some of their children’s school expenses and vocational training.
