Traditional Ugandan basket-weaving plus modern design updates an ancient art form. Broad rings of blue and cream shape this 13-inch basket, with diagonal checked accents.

The interior fiber forming the core of each coil is banana fiber, around which raffia palm is wrapped. With each wrapping, the fiber is threaded through the previous coil to form the basket. After coiling raffia around the banana stems, artisans use raffia to cover three or four coils across, after which dyed palm leaves are used to make a design in the basket. Artisans remove the membrane on the underside of each leaf to create the long thin fibers, which can be woven and dyed to make many products.
