Artisans in the town of Salay, the Philippines, create this frame with handmade paper. The primary raw material for this paper is cogon grass, a weed that interferes with local farming. Many farmers have dealt with the problem by cutting and burning the grass. Now many are gathering the grass for paper production, which helps them to earn extra income from their land. The dried flowers and ferns used to decorate the picture are grown in the artisans’ gardens.
