About Us

About Ten Thousand Villages in Cambridge, MA

Ten Thousand Villages in Cambridge, MA, is a fair trade retailer of artisan-crafted home decor, personal accessories and gift items from across the globe. Featuring products from more than 130 artisan groups in some 38 countries, we are part of a network of over 390 retail outlets throughout the United States selling Ten Thousand Villages products.

As one of the world’s oldest and largest fair trade organizations, Ten Thousand Villages has spent more than 60 years cultivating trading relationships in which artisans receive a fair price for their work and consumers have access to distinctive handcrafted items. We seek to establish long-term buying relationships in places where skilled artisans are under- or unemployed, and in which they lack other opportunities for income. A founding member of the World Fair Trade Organization (WFTO), Ten Thousand Villages sees fair trade as an alternative approach to conventional international trade.

Volunteer

We welcome you to join our village of volunteers! As a nonprofit store, volunteers are crucial to our success, helping us to keep our overhead costs lower, which allows us to purchase more from artisans. Apply now to join our fun-filled volunteer positions—greeting and interacting with customers, unpacking and checking orders, assisting with displays and operating the cash register. We welcome volunteers any time of the year.

FREE Community Meditation - August 20, 2014

6:45pm - 8pm

FREE Meditation - Spring/Summer Series!

For those of you that are new:
We started this partnership with meditation teacher Gena Bean from Mindful Boston in April of 2013 as a way to offer Mindful Meditation events in service to our community. We have been meditating on compassion and human connection as one of the traditional ways to build resiliency during times of stress.

Gena will be taking a break from leading our Free Community Mediation but we do have another wonderful partnership opportunity with Julie Fraser from Inhale Yoga Now (visit www.inhaleyoganow.com for more information). Julie, a certified yoga and meditation teacher, has graciously offered to lead us through our Spring and Summer Series. Gena will be returning to lead us once again through the Fall and Winter. Here are the details:

Spring/Summer Dates and Time:
3rd Wednesday of each month
April 16, May 21, June 18, July 16 and August 20
6:45pm to 8pm

10% Off:
As a bonus, all regular priced meditation related items will be discounted 10% on the days the sessions are held. (singing bowls, fountains, pillows, wind chimes, hand cymbals, candles, incense, cat eye pillows and yoga CDs)

Fall/Winter Dates and Time:
1st Friday of each month
September 5, October 3, November 7
6:45pm to 8pm

What is planned:
There will be an informal schedule. At about 6:45pm we'll set up some seats and have a chat about what meditation is about. Please stay tuned for details about the content of Julie's meditation sessions.

Reservations and Seating:
To reserve your space please RSVP through Mindful Boston’s MeetUp group or Ten Thousand Villages-Cambridge Facebook Event Page. You may also email us (cambride@tenthousandvillages.com) or call 617-876-2414. Feel free to leave a message if you call outside of regular business hours. There are no "tickets" but a head count is helpful in order to prepare enough space for sitting together. There are only seven folding chairs so if you need one please make sure to request one. Low stools and pillows (artisan crafted and available for purchase) will also be on hand to use although quantities will vary based on in-store availability. You may also feel free to sit on the floor and/or bring a pillow with you.

We're looking forward to seeing both new and familiar faces!

10% Off:
As a bonus, all regular priced meditation related items will be discounted 10% on the days the sessions will be held. (singing bowls, fountains, pillows, wind chimes, hand cymbals, candles, incense, cat eye pillows and yoga CDs)

Dates and Time:

Fall/Winter series - 1st Friday of each month
September 5, October 3, November 7
6:45pm to 8pm

Gena will be taking a break from leading our series during the summer. But please stay tuned. We'll be making interim plans to continue a Monthly Mindful Meeting of one kind or another.

What is planned:
There will be an informal schedule. At about 6:45pm we'll set up some seats and have a chat about what meditation is about. The hour we spend together will include discussion about compassionate healing for ourselves and each other as well as an experience of compassion meditation. The length of the meditation itself will probably be about 15 to 20 minutes long. No previous experience is required; the meditation will be easy for beginners to understand.

Reservations and Seating:
To reserve your space please RSVP through Ten Thousand Villages or Mindful Boston's Facebook Events pages or call the store (617-876-2414). Feel free to leave a message if you're calling outside of regular business hours. There are no "tickets" but a head count is helpful in order to prepare enough space for sitting together. There are seven chairs, but no zafu style cushions. If you need a chair, make sure to say 'reserve a chair' in your RSVP comments. Low stools and pillows (artisan crafted and available for purchase) will also be on hand to use although quantities will vary based on in-store availability. You may also feel free to sit on the floor and/or bring a pillow with you.

We're looking forward to seeing both new and familiar faces!
