Capiz Bowls and TrayPRINT THIS PAGE

SKU: 7913170

SKU# 7913170

The colors of the sea—bright capiz shell bowls in shades of blue, green and turquoise. Three square bowls fit in serving tray, perfect for snacks or condiments. Made from laminated, painted capiz shell by Filipino artisans.

Artisans soften the shells with hydrogen peroxide, after which they shape them into the desired form, cutting the edge for the scalloped shape. The shells are held together with a laminate, and the entire piece is then painted and finished. Fishermen collect capiz clams for food and sell the shells for craft making. In some cases, capiz is farmed inside fenced-off areas along the seashore where it is allowed to grow for up to three months. Fishermen then swim in this area and choose shells based on size.
