Capiz Square EarringsPRINT THIS PAGE

SKU: 7913230

SKU# 7913230

These delicate, wafer-thin earrings are made from capiz, the thin, naturally off-white shell of clams. Harvested in the waters off the Philippines, the clam shell is cut and edged with wire, then varnished. Match it with our capiz square necklace.

First artisans wash the shells with soap and water. Next, they soak the shells in a weak acid solution. After the shells have dried, they are cut into shapes and edged with silver metal wire. The piece is then smoked to achieve the lovely burnished appearance. A finishing coat of varnish completes this labor-intensive process. Before glass windows became available in the Philippines, capiz was used for windows in houses.
