Currently the site of much military turbulence, the Middle East is also the birthplace of many of the world’s most complex civilizations. Located north of the Indian Ocean between Africa and Asia, the Middle East is home to countries such as Turkey, Iraq, Afghanistan, and Saudi Arabia. It is also home to Egypt, Israel and the West Bank. Three of the world’s great religions – Judaism, Christianity and Islam – originated in the Middle East. Despite its recent history of conflict, the Middle East is also a place of remarkable achievement; the region represents a complex juxtaposition of traditional and modern cultures. Egypt in particular represents this contrast between past and present cultures weaving the architectural traditions of ancient Pharaonic and Roman empires with contemporary styles and designs.
