Description

Artisans of Kwanza craft this thumb piano from a dried gourd and wooden top. The thumb piano is an instrument unique to Africa, with a sounding box that can be made of wood, reeds, gourds, turtle shells or another hollow or concave object. The tongues, also called spikes, are usually made of metal, but occasionally of reeds. A popular use of the thumb piano is to accompany storytelling. The most common chants or accompaniments consist of three-tone melodies repeated over and over.

  • More decorative than instrument
    . . . . .

I was expecting more of a usable instrument instead of a decorative piece. It did not sound like other finger pianos I've encountered and also did not feel very durable. I had to return it and do some research to find where to buy a 'real' finger piano....
