Chulucanas potters create whimsical and attractive products using ancient Peruvian techniques.

Hand burnished with rock and based on ancient cultural motifs, Chulucanas pottery is made by descendants of indigenous Peruvian artists. Modern artisans researched the negative-positive technique, developed more than 2,000 years ago. Its renewed use has evolved into a variety of shades from light to an almost black ocher. Artisans paint the designs with slip, a diluted clay mixture. The piece is fired with burning mango leaves, creating the dark color while the slip patterning remains light.
