Chulucanas Expression BowlPRINT THIS PAGE

SKU: 6100060

SKU# 6100060

Chulucanas artisans paint this unique design using clay-based “ngobes.” After the bowl is fired, they paint the circle designs with slip. The piece is fired with burning mango leaves to create the dark color. Artisans chip off the hardened slip, paint a red ngobe inside some of the circles, and fire the piece once more to create the caramel color of the circles. The bowl is burnished with a stone and finished with wax.

In Chulucanas, a small town on the north coast of Peru, local potters have been creating unique clay items for centuries. The inhabitants of the town descend from ancient pre-Columbian people who inhabited this region. They developed these “reverse technique” ceramics, displayed today in some museums under the name of Vicus pottery.
