Clay Chulucanas LampPRINT THIS PAGE

SKU: 6109470

SKU# 6109470

The geometric designs on this lamp are created using clay-based natural substances called "ngobes." First the entire piece is coated with an off-white ngobe and fired. After this, artisans draw the designs and paint them with slip, a diluted clay mixture. The piece is then fired in a barbeque pit with burning mango leaves, which creates the dark color on the bowl - because of the slip applied, the patterning remains a light color. Finally, the lamp is burnished with a stone, and finished with wax.

In Chulucanas, a small town on the north coast of Peru, local potters have been creating unique clay items for centuries. The inhabitants of the town descend from ancient pre-Columbian people who inhabited this region. They developed these "reverse technique" ceramics, displayed today in some museums under the name of Vicus pottery.
