A swirl of flowing color in textured sand decorates the surface of this circular ceramic candleholder from Indonesia.

Artisans adhere sand to the terra cotta candleholder with glue. After drying, the candleholder is dyed the base color. Then other colors are added to water, darkest to lightest. The water is stirred, then the candleholder is quickly inserted and removed to produce the swirled color effect. This mixing process is repeated separately for each candleholder.
