All the news that’s fit to weave—artisans’ careful handwork makes a beautiful and effective hot mat from recycled newspapers. This rectangular table mat is handmade by the Women’s Multipurpose Cooperative in Baguio City, Philippines. This innovative new process turns old newspapers into new and beautiful products by wrapping the paper into coils and forming them into spiraled square building blocks. These building blocks are then joined together with thread and/or glue. All the products are then starched to make them hard and shiny. They have been tested and should stand up to heat and moisture that comes with average use.
