Children around the “world” of an etched gourd celebrate Christmas. A hand-etched gourd is burned to fill in design areas. Decorative only. Keep out of reach of children.

Artisans of Manos Amigas in Lima, Peru, harvest ripe gourds, peel them and dry them in the sun. The artisans then carve the design on the gourd, after which they accent the designs with red-hot pieces of burned wood, a process that takes about two hours for each gourd. When the burning is complete the gourd is painted with a natural paint made with ground chalk, called tiza, mixed with water. Later most of the finish is washed off; the residue gives beauty to the carved parts of the design.
