Day or night, the sounds of drumming waft across West Africa as drummers practice djembe, honoring the importance of everyone coming together. This djembe drum is held in place by five supportive hand-carved tortoises.

The djembe originated in West Africa, and is integral to the region’s musical tradition and culture. The djembe is now popular throughout the world. Djembe drums are leather-covered hand drums, shaped like a large goblet, played with bare hands. According to the Bamana people in Mali, the name “djembe” comes from a saying translated as “everyone gather together,” and defines the drum’s purpose. “Dje” is the verb for “gather” in Bamanakan, and “be” translates as “everyone.”
