Discover Lost Wax with Stacy Spivak, Buyer for Ten Thousand Villages

A reminder of impermanence is captured through lost wax. A wax figure is sculpted lovingly by hand, then encased in clay. The clay mold is set to dry in the sun, and fired until firm. The wax inside melts and is collected to be used again. It’s a cycle. Beeswax takes a shape, only to dissolve and be replaced by something more permanent-bronze.

The artisan has a vision to be turned tactile, and after each clay mold is filled with molten bronze-melted remnants of recycled faucets or other scrap metal-the clay is chipped away, never to hold another figure of its same likeness. Every lost wax statue is unique. And while the wax and clay are in a state of constant flux, the bronze left behind by the process will last forever.

A variety of stances are depicted through the almost silhouette-like figures of long and willowy women. Each stance represents a motion and emotion. The villagers of Burkina Faso take pride in their creations, knowing that the work of their hands will last forever. Each piece is individually signed by its maker, giving it the authenticity of a work of fine art.

Atelier de Formation et de Promotion des Artisans

Atelier de Formation et de Promotion des ArtisansAtelier de Formation et de Promotion des Artisans is comprised of nearly 400 artisans in and around Ouagadougou, the capital city, and several in Bobo Dioulasso, the economic center of Burkina Faso. Most of the artisans work at the Centre National D’Artisanat, the Village Artisanal de Ouagadougou, which was started in 2000 by the Luxembourg government to showcase the work of Burkinabe artisans, and the Maison des Artisans. These three centers double as workshops and exhibition spaces. In addition, a few of the artisans work in their homes. Read more.
