ARTISAN: Michée Ramil Remy
Discover the art of cut metal with Doug Lapp, buyer for Ten Thousand Villages
Michée Ramil Remy was born on June 26, 1970, in the village of Croix des Bouquets. He learned the cut metal craft from his step-father Gabriel Bien-Aimé, one of Haiti’s most famous artists.
Over the years, Michée worked to perfect his art, developing a unique and highly personalized style, easily differentiated from others in its attention to detail. Michée had a special fondness for including birds in his creations, even depicting them playing with fish under water in his marine designs.
In the same way that he was instructed by Mr. Bien-Aimé, Michée taught many young artisans in Croix des Bouquets, continuing a legacy of an artisan he earned international acclaim and realized great success in the sale of his work. A gentle, quiet man, Michée had a warm and genuine smile for anyone he met. Sadly, after a lengthy struggle with chronic illness, he died in Croix des Bouquets on March 11, 2012 at age 41.
He is remembered as a national treasure.
