Groovy gecko makes a fun gift for a guitar-playing friend or musician. Made from strips cut from recycled soda cans, this lounge lizard is created by a group of artisans in Cape Town, South Africa, led by Victor Chiteura. Chiteura is a Zimbabwean asylum seeker who has created this craft enterprise as a means for himself and others to earn a living. They market their creations through African Home.

African Home, based in Cape Town, works to empower economically disadvantaged artisans in the country. The organization assists a wide variety of artisans working in different types of craft production, and with varied access to export markets. Some of the artisans are refugees or asylum seekers such as Chiteura who, while they are registered the government and are allowed to work informally, struggle to find formal employment because of a lack of identity numbers. African Home works with approximately 500 artisans in some 90 groups that produce wire and bead items, recycled tin items, Zulu baskets, beaded calabashes, ceramic and clay pots, beaded jewelry, felt and textile items. “Victor Chiteura is proud to be called ‘Zvakanaka,’ a term of endearment given to him by his crafter team. Zvakanaka, means ‘maker of nice stuff,’ a modest assessment of one whose reliability and attention to detail and quality places him ahead of his competition in the wireworks craft sector,” said Claudette Davis of African Home.
