  • Description

Butterfly wings glow in the warm light of a single votive candle. Candleholder is handcrafted “stained glass” style with panels of capiz bordered in wire. Capiz is the thin shell of a marine mollusk. First artisans wash and soak shells. After the shells have dried, they are cut into shapes and edged with metal wire. A finishing coat of varnish completes this labor-intensive process. Before glass windows became available in the Philippines, capiz was used for windows in houses.

The wax of votive candles may spill from the shallow metal candle holder and it's a pain to remove the residual wax when the candle is spent. Tea lites have their own metal holder and just pop out.
