Artisans in Ecuador create this necklace using the tagua nut, produced by a palm-like tree in tropical South America. This renewable resource generates income and encourages forest preservation. To make the beads of this necklace, artisan Albert Ricardo Espin Lopez, along with members of his small family workshop, carve the tagua nuts into the desired bead shape. They then buff the surface to achieve the smooth finish, and dye them in bright colors.
