what would it look like
to live in a world
without poverty?

What if all people everywhere were paid a fair wage and had the opportunity to provide clean water, food, shelter, basic medical care and education for their families and communities?

What if we could achieve this vision … together?

Ten Thousand Villages envisions a world where all people everywhere will earn a fair wage, be treated with dignity and respect and be empowered to live a life of quality.

Our Mission

Ten Thousand Villages’ mission is to create opportunities for artisans in developing countries to earn income by bringing their products and stories to North American markets through long-term, fair trading relationships.

Meet the artisans ...

Our Impact

In the last year, Ten Thousand Villages has partnered with over 99 organizations impacting the lives of more than 20,000 artisans in 33 countries. Since 1946, we have provided over $140 million in sustainable income to artisans in developing countries who would have otherwise been unemployed or underemployed.

Ethical at Every Step

A maker-centered business model

  • A Fair Price

We pay mutually agreed upon prices for artisans’ creations and deliver advance payments to nurture resilient enterprises that can grow and flourish.

  • Long-Term Partnerships

We build lasting relationships with artisan groups, providing consistency and stability that allows makers to plan ahead and improve their quality of life.

  • Good Working Conditions

We ensure that artisans have safe and healthy places to work. Child labor is prohibited in an effort to keep kids in school and out of the workforce.

  • Design Collaboration

We share trend details with makers and team up to create inventive modern designs that preserve traditional skills of craftsmanship passed down through generations.

  • Eco-Conscious Commitment

We aim to keep the earth’s resources in balance, emphasizing the use of recycled or renewable natural materials and applying sustainable environmental practices.

  • Empowered Voices

We partner with women and people who are often overlooked so all have a chance to thrive and create change for themselves, their families and their communities.

what makes Ten Thousand Villages unique?

Purchasing Where It’s Needed

Ten Thousand Villages evaluates artisan groups based on the United Nations Human Development Index and the Genie Coefficient, evaluating the disparity between poverty and wealth, in each of the countries in which we work. Purchasing is determined on need and sustainability, with the average relationship with our artisan groups being 12 years.

Isn’t Buying Products Enough? Why Do You Need Donations?

Because we do business differently to fulfill our mission, we have different challenges. From product development and technical considerations to communities that lack infrastructure, where rolling blackouts, rainy seasons, and political unrest can all affect production, the commitment and support we provide is costly. In an increasingly competitive retail marketplace, we assume more risk than traditional businesses, because we are devoted to making consistent purchases that create sustainable income.

Success Story

Following the 2015 earthquake, special gifts helped rebuild a fair trade workshop in Kathmandu, meaning that artisans could return to work and continue earning sustainable income for their craft.
