Good Luck PigPRINT THIS PAGE

SKU# 8700540

May the pig of good fortune smile on you! This delightful terracotta pig is made with clay dug from the mountainside near the village of Pomaire, Chile. This clay is traditionally used to create earthenware cookware used over an open fire, but in this instance it is transformed into a “chanchito,” a little three-legged pig. These are given to friends as tokens of love and good fortune.

Potters working with Chilean artisan group Comparte create this small pig from earthenware clay. After it has been formed, it is set in the sun to dry. When it has been sun-dried, it is fired. The adobe firing oven, heated to a temperature of 800 to 900 degrees Celsius, is fueled by eucalyptus wood purchased from plantations along Chile’s coast. Potters determine length of firing by size of the pottery pieces and capacity of the adobe kiln.
