Brass singing bowl, copper finish, wooden stick. Wisdom Eyes look in all four directions at Buddhist shrines to symbolize “all-seeing.” Wisdom Eyes are so prevalent throughout Nepal that they have become a symbol of the country.

Traditionally, artisans use seven materials to make a singing bowl: tin, copper, brass, silver, gold, aluminum and manganese. Quality of sound depends on material proportions. The bowl is produced by sand casting: Sand and clay are filled in a mold with a die. Materials are melted and poured into the mold. The cooled bowl is placed on a spinning machine to chip off rough edges, shape the bowl to size and polish it. If fine polishing is needed, the artisan grinds the bowl and polishes it.

Often used for meditation, the music of a singing bowl is meant to soothe your soul, cleanse your heart and free your mind of worries. To make the bowl sing, first tap it. Firmly hold the smooth part of the stick upright against the bowl and move it slowly around the outside of the bowl in a circular motion keeping firm contact with the bowl’s surface. The bowl will start to resonate.
