Congolese kings and shepherds attend the Holy Family. Skilled carvers in Kinshasa craft this 11-piece nativity set from locally grown wenge wood. Stylized figures with Congolese features and decorative motifs.

Wenge wood grows abundantly in The Democratic Republic of the Congo and due to the lack of industrial wood usage in the country, supplies are plentiful. Artisans in DR Congo work in the midst of a chaotic situation, in which corruption and uncertainty are endemic.

Exporters here face considerable obstacles, including a port that is the most expensive in Africa. Ten Thousand Villages has established a trading relationship with Artisanat et Developpment, a local artisans’ organization established with the assistance of Mennonite Central Committee, a U.S.-based relief and development organization. Artisanat et Developpment provides training and marketing assistance to artisans in the country, and ensures that they receive fair payment for their products. Along with its export business, Artisanat et Developpment also runs a retail store in the capital city of Kinshasa, representing some 100 local artisans.
