Intricate “mandala” design decorates these hand-painted and lacquered papier-mâché coasters. Produced by a Kashmir cooperative that trains artisans with physical disabilities. This hand-painting tradition was introduced to Kashmir in the 1400s.

Papier-mâché is the art of making items from paper pulp and glue. The artisan molds a form around a base shape, then it is dried and painted. The art of papier-mâché was introduced in Kashmir in the 15th century by a Kashmiri prince who spent years in prison at Samarkand in Central Asia. Papier-mâché art was highly favored by the Mughal emperors of the 15th and 16th century.
