A uniquely beautiful use of reverse painted glass. Layers of rich color are luminous with light shining through.

In reverse glass painting the design is silk screened onto the back or reverse side of the glass. The painting is done “back to front”: details painted first, then larger color areas, and finally a background color. In the last stage, artisans apply a coat of varnish to protect the paint. Reverse painting requires great care and skill, as the visual “surface” is painted first then layered over, so errors cannot be corrected. Reverse painting has an ancient history going back to the Middle Ages.
