MCC School Kit Collection Project - August 1, 2014 - September 30, 2014

Ten Thousand Villages Montreat, in conjunction with the Mennonite Central Committee, is collecting School Kits for refugee and displaced children in developing countries. School kits are the Committee’s most-requested item. Notebooks and pencils become treasures to families who struggle to afford basic school supplies. School kits also are given to refugee and displaced children, helping students and teachers to add some normalcy to disrupted lives. The kits are frequently requested after disasters. MCC sends school kits to places including Afghanistan, Jordan and Kenya.

To prepare a School Kit, please include the following items in a flat bag or a ziplock bag:
• 4 spiral or perforated notebooks (8 1/2 x 10 1/2 in and 70 sheets)
• 4 unsharpened pencils
• 1 ruler(flat, flexible plastic; indicating both 30 cm and 12 in)
• 12 colored pencils (in packaging)
• 1 large pencil eraser

School Kits can be dropped off at the Montreat Ten Thousand Villages during store hours from August 1 through September 30, 2014. For more information, please visit the http://www.mcc.org/kits/school website.

Elephant Appreciation Day - September 21, 2014

1:00-5:00 PM

In celebration of Elephant Appreciation DayTen Thousand Villages in Montreat will donate 15% of sales to The Elephant Sanctuary in Hohenwald, Tennessee.

The Elephant Sanctuary is the nation's largest natural-habitat refuge developed specifically to meet the needs of endangered elephants. It is a non-profit organization, licensed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency, and accredited by the Association of Sanctuaries, designed specifically for old, sick or needy elephants who have been retired from zoos and circuses. Utilizing more than 2700 acres, it provides three separate and protected, natural-habitat environments for Asian and African elephants. The elephants who live there are not required to perform or entertain for the public; instead, they are encouraged to live like elephants.

"Elephant food" (delicious vegetables and fruits) will be served, and a video about The Elephant Sanctuary will be available to view. In addition, an elephant themed "free gift with purchase over $30" will be given. We will also have a drawing for a kisii stone elephant soap dish, and our hand crafted elephants will be highlighted in the store throughout the benefit
