After the catastrophic earthquake in Nepal, a new safe workshop opens.

Rebuilt Fair Trade Workshop Opens in Nepal - Annapurna - Earthquake - Ten Thousand Villages

With help from Ten Thousand Villages US and Canada, Catholic Relief Services, and SERRV, a workshop in Nepal destroyed by the catastrophic earthquake has been officially rebuilt. The workshop was finished on June 30 and production resumed on August 1, 2016.

Destruction from the April 25, 2015 earthquake destroyed or damaged 700,000 homes and buildings throughout Kathmandu and the surrounding communities. Many artisan groups with whom Ten Thousand Villages has maintained committed and long-term, fair-trading relationships were affected by this massive damage.

The group Manushi was eager to continue providing meaningful work and daily routine to the makers at their jewelry workshop in Annapurna. This jewelry workshop is operated out of the family home of two sons, two daughters-in-law, and uncle and his wife. Rebuilt Fair Trade Workshop Opens in Nepal - Annapurna - Earthquake - Ten Thousand VillagesSince their workshop is also their home, it was imperative that the building be repaired to a safe and habitable state as the victims recovered and resumed their livelihoods.

The new workplace helps restore normalcy and continue the steady income makers need to help support their craft, family, and the community around them. It has created new hope for people affected by this devastating natural disaster.
