As we walk along the beach, we find gifts laid there for us by the sea. She whispers, but never speaks. We can only guess her thoughts as we collect what she leaves for us to find, washed up along the shores.
Even if you live far from the sea, you can embrace her gifts in your home. The dining table is the ideal place to incorporate a tidal theme. There’s something about blues and whites that create a soothing atmosphere and the look of fresh produce against beachy hues teases our appetites.
Now set the table and enjoy the splendors of the ocean.
Next set out the dishes. The Gentle Sea Salad Bowl is inspired by a calm ocean. The top portion is glazed in natural blue, while the base takes the colors of earth. It’s the place where water and land meet. The Gentle Sea Fish Plate incorporates the same colors, but calls out its inspiration more clearly by taking the shape of a fish. Both of these unique pieces from Prescraft are created at the loving hands of master potters, who form them by hand from the clay and tend to them through the night as they are fired in a kiln.
For serving utensils, the Mother-of-Pearl Salad Servers are simple and sophisticated, incorporating precious mother-of-pearl to show the beauty that lives within a seashell. The Good Company Serving Set, likewise, is stunning in stainless steel.
For glassware, consider the Highlands Pitcher, Tumbler and Slender Bud Base. These unique glass pieces have tiny bubbles inside, alluding to water and life. Handmade by glassblowers, no two are exactly alike. These pieces will keep with the subtle, rustic-sophisticate style of the rest of the table.
This ensemble creates a comfortable yet elevated effect—perfect for a first date or special occasion.
Make a Feast
It’s no secret that the combination of scallops and bacon is an amazing thing. Try this easy recipe that incorporates breadcrumbs and white wine. Recipe courtesy of Canelle et Vanille. The perfect way to honor the ocean.
Roasted Scallops with Breadcrumbs and Bacon
makes 4 servings
1/4 cup seasoned breadcrumbs
2 tbsp. fresh parsley, chopped
2 garlic cloves, grated or finely minced
3 tbsp. olive oil
4 slices of bacon, finely chopped
pinch of freshly ground pepper
1 tsp red pepper flakes, optional
2 tbsp. white wine
Preheat oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit. In a bowl, combine the breadcrumbs, parsley, garlic, bacon and olive oil. Salt and pepper the scallops. Drizzle some olive oil on a baking dish and place the scallops on it. Top with the breadcrumbs mixture and drizzle some more olive oil on top. Pour the white wine in the baking dish to add a dash of acidity (alcohol will cook off in the oven).
Cook time will vary depending on the size of your scallops. Once complete, this dish is a beautiful homage to the gifts the ocean has to offer.
