Natural Fiber HandbagPRINT THIS PAGE

SKU: 7910020

SKU# 7910020

A casual summer handbag in all natural fibers. Woven abaca fiber from the abaca tree, buri fiber from the tall buri palm tree, and jute from the jute plant, all edged with natural colored cotton fabric. Created by artisans working with Much in Little in the Philippines.

Abaca grows much like a banana tree, with a slender trunk and leaves that are thinner than banana leaves. Artisans begin by using fine strands of abaca fiber to make cords. After this they weave the cords or ropes on a wooden loom. The resulting fabric is called sinamay. Buri fiber comes from a tall palm tree with large broad leaves found in the Philippines. Jute fiber is taken from the stalk of this tall plant.
