SKU# 6900080

The work of Symbolist Gustav Klimt inspired Indonesian artisans of APIKRI in their own painting. Combining styles of East and West, they paint bold abstract geometrical fields like this painted wood frame mirror.

The Indonesian People’s Handicraft Foundation (APIKRI) is an independent association of craftspeople. A nongovernmental organization, APIKRI helps organize craft workers and provides export marketing services, technical assistance, training and other supports. Most of APIKRI’s artisans work in and around the city of Yogyakarta and Central Java, areas renowned for craft production. When artisans with Ten Thousand Villages partner APIKRI were introduced to the work of Austrian artist Gustav Klimt, they were so inspired they sought ways to incorporate his artistic ideas into their own work. The result is this vibrantly fused style on mirrors and candleholders. Gustav Klimt was a Austrian symbolist with connections with the French and German Art Nouveau movement. The influences shown on this home décor are primarily in the Symbolist style. They represent a fresh approach by the artisans of APIKRI, who paint spirited designs on wood.
