Fair Trade

What it means. How it's made. Why it matters.

Ten Thousand Villages presents a world of difference with exquisite home decor, personal accessories and gift items handcrafted by artisans around the world. Artisans whose work isn't just their livelihood, but an expression of their culture. Ten Thousand Villages invites you to escape the ordinary and immerse yourself in a world of colors, textures, aromas, flavors and sounds.

Ten Thousand Villages in Oak Park is a non-profit, fair trade retailer offering handicrafts by artisans in more than 35 developing countries. Products include jewelry and personal accessories, home and garden decor, musical instruments, toys, coffee, tea, and chocolate.

About Us

About Ten Thousand Villages in Oak Park, IL

Ten Thousand Villages in Oak Park, IL, is a fair trade retailer of artisan-crafted home decor, personal accessories and gift items from across the globe. Featuring products from more than 130 artisan groups in some 38 countries, we are part of a network of over 390 retail outlets throughout the United States selling Ten Thousand Villages products.

As one of the world’s oldest and largest fair trade organizations, Ten Thousand Villages has spent more than 60 years cultivating trading relationships in which artisans receive a fair price for their work and consumers have access to distinctive handcrafted items. We seek to establish long-term buying relationships in places where skilled artisans are under- or unemployed, and in which they lack other opportunities for income. A founding member of the World Fair Trade Organization (WFTO), Ten Thousand Villages sees fair trade as an alternative approach to conventional international trade.

Our store opened on September 7, 2007. We hope you will stop by to explore the wonderful variety of items we offer, to find things for yourself as well as gifts for the holidays and throughout the year.

Community Shopping Nights at Ten Thousand Villages

Support global artisans and help you organization grow!

Ten Thousand Villages is partnering with churches, school and other nonprofits to host Community Shopping Nights. On a designated evening, your members will enjoy shopping for unique, handcrafted products made by artisans from around the globe. Ten Thousand Villages will donate 15 percent of that evening's net sales to your organization.

Community Shopping Nights are a fun and easy way for your organization to raise money and support fair trade. Since opening our store in 2007, we have hosted successful Shopping Nights with organizations like the Oak Park River Forest Food Pantry, Ascension Parish, West Suburban PADS and Julian Middle School.

We encourage you to publicize your Community Shopping Night to your staff, board, volunteers and member as much as possible. Past partners have used their newsletters, meetings, websites and flyers to spread the word. Ten Thousand Villages will post your Shopping Night on our website. We can also send a speaker to your organization to explain our mission and generate excitement for your Shopping Night. The more shoppers you attract to your Shopping Night, the greater your fundraising success that evening.

We hope you'll consider partnering with us. For more information, contact Clare Leavitt, Store Manager, at (708)848-4572 or manager.oakpark@tenthousandvillages.com

The Value of Volunteers

As a non-profit store, volunteers are absolutely critical to our success. By keeping operating costs low we can offer our customers the best prices of fair trade goods. More importantly, by telling artisans' stories, volunteers bring our mission and the works of our producers in developing countries to life.

Currently, we use the services of volunteers in almost every aspect of our business - from greeting customers, ringing up sales, serving on board committees, and assisting with offsite sales; to unpacking merchandise and assisting with product displays.

We are seeking volunteers to become:

  • Customer Service Associates: Our first line of customer contact in the store
  • Board Members: Our leaders who help oversee Ten Thousand Villages in Oak Park

Benefits to Volunteers:

  • Friendly customers and great co-workers
  • Fabulous fair trade merchandise environment
  • A generous discount

Your volunteering experience begins with a brief orientation and two training sessions.

Training sessions:

  • We have an orientation and training sessions every month from February to September. Please contact us for more details.
