Be wise, don’t let your papers blow away. This rolypoly little owl can help you out. Carved from solid stone, it is not going to let your stack of papers go anywhere. Using local hillside stone, artisans chisel the form and features of this sculpture. They coat the gray stone with beeswax to add luster.

An earlier tradition of stone carving in Haiti was revitalized as hardwoods for wood carving became scarce. Young apprentice stone carvers learned from the first innovators. The dark gray stone is found in hillsides near the town of Leogane, where the owl paperweights are carved. Leogane is located very near the epicenter of the January 2010 earthquake, and suffered extensive damage to homes, businesses and roads.
