Pashmina is the soft fur found close to the skin of the Chyangra, or Himalayan mountain goat. These goats live high in the mountains, where temperatures rarely rise above -30 degrees F in winter. This fur provides the goats with adequate insulation from the cold. During shearing season these fine wool fibers are carefully separated from other fibers of a lesser quality; no harm comes to the goat in the process. The softness, lightness and rarity of the wool make pashmina scarves so special.
