Made entirely from cinnamon bark, these boxes are traditionally used to store and keep loose tea fresh, or as gift boxes. Naturally scented cinnamon bark is shaped and carved by artisans in Da Nang province, Vietnam. The cinnamon bark from Tra My town is especially prized for its lovely aroma. After the bark is taken from the tree, artisans decide which kind of box it is best suited for, and dry and shape it accordingly. Cinnamon trees have a growth cycle of five years. When they reach maturity, the bark is used for crafts and the wood is burned as cooking fuel or ground into cinnamon dust. This box carries a picture of a dove, a symbol of peace. Nguyen Thi Duc, who makes cinnamon boxes, says this home-based work brings peace to families by providing sufficient income and keeping families together.
