We went to a store in downtown Northampton, MA, and tried two of their table drums, 3 of their djembe, and other drums. We decided to purchase a chocolate-brown table drums for 1) the sound, 2) the look, and 3) the price. It is absolutely a beautiful table drum, something would accentuate a room. For the sound, I wanted something deep and less varied in tone and pitch. However, you can play a variety of tone and pitch with this drum. I think it was important that I played different drums before deciding which one would suit me and my needs. Even so, I needed to play it for a couple of weeks to really know if the drum and its sounds resonate with me. Two things to note are 1) that its sound resonance can't be compared to that of the djambe and 2) that it is not tunable as I was told. So, after its being moved around and use for awhile, its sound would go flat.
I have owned three of these drums over the years. Two of them have had excellent tone, one was quite poor. I once ordered one of these and when it came in, I tried it and it was suited only for a coffee table. The tone was terrible. I would not purchase this for use as a drum without being able to play it first.
However, it is a wonderful instrument when it has good tone. I have had to keep it dehumidified in the summer or it loses its tone completely.
