Traditional djembe drum has ancient roots in West Africa. Featuring artisan-inspired carved designs on the redwood base and a goatskin hide, this drum is meant to be played with bare hands. The professional-grade drum can be tuned by tightening or loosening the cord. Traditionally, drums of this kind are used in drum circles with different styles of drums to represent the three sounds of slap, tone, and bass. Broken down, the word dje means gather while be means everyone, all together meaning everyone gather together.

Atelier de Formation et de Promotion des ArtisansAtelier de Formation et de Promotion des Artisans is comprised of nearly 400 artisans in and around Ouagadougou, the capital city, and several in Bobo Dioulasso, the economic center of Burkina Faso. Most of the artisans work at the Centre National D’Artisanat, the Village Artisanal de Ouagadougou, which was started in 2000 by the Luxembourg government to showcase the work of Burkinabe artisans, and the Maison des Artisans. These three centers double as workshops and exhibition spaces. In addition, a few of the artisans work in their homes.
