Ten Thousand Villages Responds to the Earthquake in Indonesia
July 19, 2006 - A magnitude 6.3 earthquake struck the Indonesian island of Java on May 27, causing more than 6,200 deaths and leaving hundreds of thousands of people homeless, according to the Indonesian government.
The earthquake was centered near the city of Yogyakarta in central Java. At the same time, Mount Merapi, a nearby volcano, began to erupt and this has added to the devastation for people living in the area. Four of the artisan groups that Ten Thousand Villages works with have been affected by the earthquake.
Ten Thousand Villages sent $18,000 in immediate monetary aid to the four groups to assist with earthquake relief and recovery efforts. All of the groups agree that recovery from the earthquake will be a long, hard process that will take many months and probably several years. They all say that it will be important for Ten Thousand Villages to continue to place orders with artisans who have been affected by the earthquake.
At Ten Thousand Villages, we are committed to buying products from the people who live in this area. We believe that helping to provide work for people in the earthquake affected areas over the coming months will be the most important and effective long term assistance that we can provide.
