  • Hemp Tablet Sleeve

    Posted on December 31, 2013

    SanAntonio-tablet-sleeve-620x413-pearlbrewerycom

This tablet sleeve is hand-woven from hemp fibers by a cooperative of Hmong women living in Vietnam’s northern hills. After harvesting the hemp plant, they peel the fiber from the stalk. They tie fibers together and spin them into threads that are then woven on a loom. The fabric is washed in a stream that runs through the village. It is then placed between a cylindrical stone and a flat stone; a women stands and rocks atop the stones to press the cloth. $39

  • Shea Butter and Lip Balm

    Posted on December 31, 2013

    SanAntonio-shea-butter-620x413-pearlbrewerycom

Ten Thousand Villages recently expanded their line of fairly traded and organic shea butter soaps made by artisans in Ghana. The lightly scented shea soaps include fragrances of rosemary, eucalyptus and mint as well as tea tree oil and lemon.

The Shea (“shay-a”) tree grows only in Africa, where African women have celebrated its benefits for generations. Rich in Vitamins A, D, E, F and K, natural shea butter is used for a variety of therapeutic purposes including protecting skin from the sun, nourishing dry and broken hair, caring for sensitive skin during breastfeeding, providing relief from minor skin ailments including burns and maintaining soft lustrous skin.

Shea trees grow naturally on wild lands and farmlands across West Africa. Producing shea butter is traditionally a woman’s job. It has been called “African woman’s gold” as it provides work for economically marginalized women who often have no other source of income.

From June to September, fruit that has fallen from the trees is gathered from the ground.  The extracted seeds are roasted, crushed, and made into a thick paste, which is kneaded by hand, washed and boiled. Eventually, creamy shea butter emerges.

Women artisans in Ghana carefully hand-process Ten Thousand Villages’ shea butter cream and soaps using traditional African techniques. This traditional processing allows the shea butter to retain its natural color and all of its beneficial qualities.

Through fair trade with Ten Thousand Villages artisans receive a fair price for their products, consistent orders and work with dignity. Consistent work and fair prices allow artisans to improve their lives, send their children to school and dream of a brighter future.

Ten Thousand Villages offers home decor items, jewelry and personal accessories handcrafted from recycled and sustainable materials.

Ten Thousand Villages offers products from more than 130 artisan groups in 35 countries via a network of more than 390 retail outlets throughout the United States.

For more than 65 years, Ten Thousand Villages has established fair, long-term buying relationships in places where skilled artisans lack opportunities for stable income.

  • Lombok Chili Pots

    Posted on December 31, 2013

    SanAntonio-chili-pots-620x413-pearlbrewerycom

Hand-formed by women potters of Lombok, Indonesia, these chili pots are low fired over a wood fire and packed in straw. Before firing, the pots are burnished with a mixture of fine clay, water and oil, then rubbed with a smooth stone or hard object. This compacts and strengthens the pot’s surface, and creates a sheen that enhances the colors and marks created by firing. Perfect for clay pot cooking, from oven to table.

Available in two sizes. Small, $20. Large, $49.

Derived from the trunk of the banana tree, banana fiber is a renewable material with many uses. After bananas are harvested, pieces are cut from the tree, boiled down, and pounded with simple tools. The fiber can then be spun into a soft yarn. A great alternative to animal wool, banana fiber yarn is lightweight and warm. The blue color is natural indigo dye. Muffler, $39. Hat, $24.
