    Time to Cruise Clock. Artisans transform bicycle chain into creative home décor. Artisans of Noah’s Ark, an artisan group in Moradabad, India, fashion items like this from recycled bicycle chain. The cost of metals has skyrocketed in recent years, which has had a devastating effect on the local economy and on the lives of metal workers in Moradabad. Noah’s Ark has worked hard to train artisans in using alternative metals and materials. Suggested retail price, $29.

    Dancing Girl Earrings. Playful earrings capture the inventive spirit of KICK Trading, an artisan group in Kisumu, Kenya, on Lake Victoria. Handcrafted from recycled soda cans and wire—a fun fashion statement. Suggested retail price, $12.

    Encore Baby Giraffe. Keeping Cape Town free of debris, artisans collect soda cans to create this long-limbed baby giraffe. Made of strips cut from recycled soda cans, is created by a group of artisans in Cape Town, South Africa, led by Victor Chiteura. Chiteura is a Zimbabwean asylum seeker who has created this craft enterprise as a means for himself and others to earn a living. They market their creations through African Home. Suggested retail price, $24.

    Resurrection Tree Necklace. Rajana artisans symbolically resurrect life from the damage of war. This handcrafted tree is made from one of the many bomb casings still found across Cambodia. War in Cambodia littered the landscape with bomb casings and unexploded bombs. These casings are collected by a demining agency and transformed by artisans with Rajana. “When we make jewelry [like this] then we know our country has peace,” said one young silversmith. Suggested retail price, $39.

    Gift of Reading Sari Bookmark. Lovingly stitched by the artisans of Sacred Mark, this bookmark helps improve the lives of women who have broken away from the sex trade and now make their living by transforming recycled sari cotton into colorful art.     Hoops of Hope

    Hoops of Hope: Artisans in Ethiopia’s rural Gojam province recycle and silver-plate beads made from recycled bullet casings from the Eritrea/Ethiopia war. Beads are hand-strung at a workshop providing jobs and hope to people with HIV/AIDS. Bronze, copper and silver-plated beads. Suggested retail price, $24.

    Tough Tire Planters

    Tough Tire Planter: Tough recycled tires make a sturdy, useful planter for out-of-doors. Plant directly in the planter, or insert plants in separate pots. Not designed to be watertight. Measures 13 inches long by 6 inches wide by 4 inches high. Suggested retail price, $24.

    Cut Metal Tree of Life: Earth-friendly Tree of Life—Haitian artisans recycle 55-gallon metal drums into this lustrous black wall hanging. Detailed hammered cutwork celebrates the natural world. Measures 17 inches square. Suggested retail price, $69.

    Recycled Reader: For anyone “nuts about books” this figurine is a must-have. Artisans in Cambodia use creative ingenuity to hand-craft this charming bookworm using recycled nuts and spark plugs. Suggested retail price, $20.

     

    Eat Drink Live Tiffin

    Eat, Drink, Live Tiffin: Traditional Indian tiffin box, or lunch box features everyday advice —“Eat,” “Drink,” ”Live”. In India, tiffin boxes are used to carry meals to school or work. This stainless steel tiffin box is a safe, ecological alternative to plastic containers or brown bags. Three stainless steel compartments with a lid; handle on top; double clasp closure. Features English writing on one side, Hindi on the other.  Suggested retail price, $24.
