The shells of spondylus mollusks (thorny oysters), harvested from the ocean floor off Ecuador and Peru, have been used since pre-Columbian times. In ancient times spondylus was used for art, religious offerings and currency. Today this purple to red shell is used to create beautiful jewelry.
