Wonderful nubbly texture and multihued colors result from weaving with recycled loom ends of silk. Located in Kathmandu, Nepal, Manushi is a nonprofit, non-governmental organization established by Padmasana Shakya in 1991 to assist poor, disadvantaged women. Manushi, meaning “energetic woman,” grew out of the Center for Women in Development, which conducted studies of women in Nepal. Prompted by these women’s questions about the benefit of the studies, Shakya established Manushi. The organization’s goals are to promote gender perspective in sustainable development, to enhance the social and economic status of women, and to put women in the forefront of human development. It also provides loans to women.
