A blaze of glorious color. Dyed raffia fiber creates a vivid red, black, and cream starburst, edged in black. Traditional Ugandan basketry, hand-woven.

The interior fiber forming the core of each coil is banana fiber, around which raffia palm is wrapped. With each wrapping, the fiber is threaded through the previous coil to form the basket. Raffia palms have the longest leaves in the plant kingdom. Raffia fibers are used in textiles, basket-making, rope-making, garden string, construction and for roofing. Artisans remove the membrane on the underside of each leaf to create the long thin fibers, which can be woven and dyed to make many products.
