Traditional “rippling star” pattern in dark blue and cream forms this Ugandan basket. The interior core of each coil is banana fiber, around which raffia palm is wrapped. With each wrapping, the fiber is threaded through the previous coil to form the basket. This basket is made by artisans working with the craft marketing arm of the National Association of Women’s Organizations of Uganda (NAWOU), many of whom are women who became widows due to war or to their husbands dying of AIDS-related illness.

The artisans live amidst some of the worst poverty in the world. Basket-making is their most marketable skill. To make products that appeal to the North American market, they have worked hard to incorporate new designs and colors into their traditional craft..
