Peruvian artisans sculpt sterling silver into stylized branches surrounding serpentine leaves. Each serpentine stone is different due to the many predominantly green minerals that occur within tiny intergrown crystals. Since pre-Hispanic times, Peruvian craftsmen have used semiprecious stones. In mosaic work of the Huari, Moche, Chimu and Lambayeque cultures, ancient civilizations of Peru, stones were cut, carved and inserted into metal or other materials, forming complex figures.
